Recent Sightings

Today conditions were positively ideal for whale watching. We had excellent visibility all the way to the horizon. Calm ocean, no wind.

AT THE POINT ARENA LIGHTHOUSE PENINSULA, WE OBSERVED:

🔷🔶 OUR FIRST TWO SOUTHBOUND GRAY WHALES OF THE SEASON‼️ 🔷🔶 – two singles about 2-3 miles offshore traveling steadily southbound

🔷 70 harbor seals

🔷 2 black oystercatchers

🔷 32 brown pelicans flying north

🔷 1 red-tailed hawk

🔷 approximately 20 meadowlarks

🔶 NO WHALES SEEN AT SAUNDERS REEF 🔶

🔷 14 brown pelicans flying north

🔷 approximately 11 meadowlarks

Excellent visibity at the Point Arena Lighthouse peninsula. Sunny, light wind, 2-3 foot waves, some whitecaps.

NO WHALES SEEN

💠 82 harbor seals

💠 4 black oystercatchers

💠 1 red-tailed hawk perched upon his or her favorite utility pole on
Lighthouse Road

💠 1 male Northern harrier – the “gray ghost”

💠 20 brown pelicans circling around the Lighthouse; 28 flying north

♦️ NO WHALES SEEN AT SAUNDERS REEF

♦️ 11 brown pelicans flying north and 2 diving into the ocean to feed

Shortly after we arrived at the Point Arena Lighthouse peninsula, FOG rolled in completely taking away all visibility.

NO WHALES SEEN

We observed:

🔅 85 harbor seals

🔅 1 great egret

🔅 1 great blue heron

🔅 1 American kestrel

🔅 23 brown pelicans flying north

AT SAUNDERS REEF THE FOG REMAINED OFFSHORE AND WE HAD GOOD VISIBILITY.

🔅 NO WHALES SEEN

🔅 48 brown pelicans flying north and 1 flying south

Conditions today were ideal for whale watching. Calm ocean, no wind, sunny, excellent visibility.

At the Point Arena Lighthouse peninsula, we obseetved:

⚛️ 1 humpback- breached twice, after taking five to six blows, not seen for 15-20 minutes

⚛️ 98 harbor seals

⚛️ 2 red-tailed hawks

⚛️ 2 flocks of surf scoters flying south

⚛️ 5 meadowlarks

⚛️ 1 great egret

⚛️ 1 great blue heron

⚛️ 2 brown pelicans flying south

⚛️ 1 American kestrel

🔴 NO WHALES SEEN AT SAUNDERS REEF

We began the day at Gerstle Cove in Salt Point State Park. It was quite foggy and visibility ranged from zero to no more than 2 miles. Lots of whitecaps.

✴️ 3 brown pelicans flying north

We then headed to the Point Arena Lighthouse peninsula where conditions were much improved! Visibility was excellent despite it being windy and lots of whitecaps.

✴️ 4 humpbacks, all singles, feeding in the area and then heading south

✴️ 63 harbor seals

✴️ 1 American kestrel

✴️ 1 black oystercatcher

✴️ 1 great blue heron

✴️ 1 Northern harrier
