Recent Sightings


  • SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2024

    Observations at the Point Arena Lighthouse peninsula:

     * 4 humpbacks, 1 whale breached once

    * 9 harbor seals (2 hauled out, 7 swimming in the water)

    * 3 Great Blue herons, (2 in flight, 1 on the ground)

    * 2 American kestrels

    Observations at Saunders Reef:

     *12 humpbacks, 2 were about 1/2 mile offshore taking long dives and slowly swimming north, the others were scattered throughout our viewing area


  • FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2024

    Observations at the Point Arena Lighthouse peninsula:

     * no whales seen

    * 33 harbor seals

    * 1 red-tailed hawk

    * 1 American kestrel

    Observations at Saunders Reef:

    * 2 humpbacks

    * 1 red-tailed Hawk

    At Robinson’s Reef:

      Shari Goforth-Eby spotted 4 humpback whales

     


  • WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2024

    Observations from the Point Arena Lighthouse peninsula:

     * no whales seen

    * 63 harbor seals

     * 1 adult bald eagle

     * 1 red-tailed hawk

     * 2 American kestrels

     * 80-100 Aleutian cackling  geese flying north

       No whales seen at Saunders Reef


  • TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2024

    Observations from the Point Arena Lighthouse peninsula:

     * Shari Goforth-Eby spotted 2 humpbacks early in the day

     * we spotted 1 humpback later in the day

     * 68 harbor seals

     * 2 great blue herons in flight

     * 1 American kestrel

     * 1 red-tailed hawk

    Observations at Saunders Reef:

    * 3 humpback whales

    * 1 red-tailed hawk

     


  • SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2024

    Observations from the bluff trail on the Sea Ranch, about one mile north of Walk On Beach:

    3 humpback whales spotted, one seen tail lobbing and then began to full breach along with a second whale; each whale breached 8-10 times side by side; an amazing sight to see! When the breaching stopped each whale blew three times and then they were not not seen again.
